Do I Need a License to Fly an Ultralight/Microlight Aircraft?

Most countries place strict operating limitations on ultralight/microlight aircraft but often don't require that you maintain a pilot's license or register your aircraft. However, training is highly recommmended.

Ultralight/Microlight Aircraft License/Reginstration Requirements by Country

The following list defines license/registration requirements for single-seat microlight/ultralight aircraft by country. Pilots are almost always required to maintain a license to fly two-seat microlights.

Australia
In Australia, microlight aircraft and their pilots can either be registered with the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA) or Recreational Aviation Australia (RA Aus). In all cases, except for privately built single-place ultralight aeroplanes, microlight aircraft or trikes are regulated by the Civil Aviation Regulations.

Canada
In Canada, an ultralight/microlight aircraft may be operated from land or water but may only carry a passenger if the pilot has an Ultralight Aeroplane Passenger Carrying Rating and the aircraft is an advanced ultralight airplane (AULA).

India
In India, ultralight/microlight aircraft require aircraft registration, periodic condition inspections, and a permit to fly. The permit must be renewed annually.

New Zealand
In New Zealand NZ Class 1 single-seat aircraft pilots are required to register their aircraft, submit to annual condition inspections, and maintain a valid permit to fly.

United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom ultralight/microlight aircraft pilots are required to maintain a valid license.

United States
In the United States no license or training is required to operate a single-seat ultralight/microlight aircraft. However, training is recommended.
